Starting with the writings of the philosophers Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), John Locke (1632-1704), Adam Smith (1723-1790), Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), James Mill (1773-1836) and his son John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) it charts the development of the conceptions of the individual in Western philosophy. It frames this development against the parallel development of theories of The State, and concludes with a brief critique my Marx.
