 This article is excerpted from my Dissertation The Social Construction of an Architectural reality in Design Education, completed at the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 1997. Copies of the whole document can be obtained by contacting the author through this website. Starting with the writings of the philosophers Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), John Locke (1632-1704), Adam Smith (1723-1790), Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), James Mill (1773-1836) and his son John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) it charts the development of the conceptions of the individual in Western philosophy. It frames this development against the parallel development of theories of The State, and concludes with a brief critique my Marx.
