Schools are increasingly designed to insulate children from public life. They look and operate more like prisons and factories than places of learning. Yet we consign our children to these often emotionally and socially toxic environments with an apparently complete disregard for their future identities. Academic freedom is available only after 18 years of thorough conditioning into passivity and quiescence. This PDF is of the summary section of a lecture given to the Western Inquiey Center at Miami University, Oxford, in April 2010.
