Morley Brill was living in a partially converted chicken shack when we met, having just emerged from a painful separation. He had little money, but a real desire to rebuild his life and make a place that would accommodate his now estranged family and perhaps be an exciting place to visit for his three children. I could empathise with his situation. He wanted to do the work himself, to demonstrate, perhaps, his ability and determination to survive this period of stress with his spirit and dignity intact. The design could therefore not be too complex. We chose the somewhat doilapidated and unpreposessing barn as the object of transformation. We lifted the roof over half of the barn's lenght and insrted a master bedroom and bathroom. Blow this was a bedroom suite (and bathroom) where his children could sleep when they visited. The remainder of the barn was a common area with an open beam ceiling made from the original barn timbers. All of the old material (including roofing iron) wsas reused to keep costs down.
