A term coined in the 1960s due to the rise of middle-class youth movements (like the “hippies”) and refers to the emergence of groups that challenge the values of the dominant society. Initially used to refer to groups opposed to the Vietnam War, it also came to refer to groups opposed to globalization, consumerism, dependence on technology, ecological destruction etc.
