Until recently, the body has been either ignored or marginalized in philosophy. Philosophers from Descartes to Kant, Marx and others have conceived of the mind, or intellect as the place where meaning is conceived. In the last 50 years, however, it has become increasingly clear that the body itself is a site of meaning and struggle. Feminists, particularly, have been instrumental in showing the body as a site of struggle (in consumerism for instance). Reich and others have gone further in suggesting that the body and its somatic capacities represent the place where experiences happen and where memories are stored. Rejecting Freud’s concept of the mind (both conscious and unconscious) as separate from body, Reich and others have reinstated the inseparable relationship between mind-body-spirit that is such a hallmark of many pre-colonised cultures.
