Base - Supestructure  E-mail
Concept used by Marx to distinguish the nature of social formations. He maintained that the Economic base of society – the ownership of the means of production – was the key to social transformation and revolution. Cultural factors were seen by Marx as superstructural, that is secondary in terms of their capacity to influence change. There is some debate whether Marx actually intended to say that the social base determined all social and cultural forms and coulkd not itself be influenced by them.
