In 1971, I worked for the Defense Attorneys for the Soledad Brother George Jackson who was later murdered in San Quentin Prison, California in a purported escape attempt. In the year or two preceeding that I had been engaged in writing research proposals for the United States Department of Justice to develop a model for a Therapeutic Prison - that is, a prison that would encourage prisoners to become independent and to break the culture of recidivism and crime. This PDF was an early reflective piece of writing that was published in the Architectural Design magazine (UK) in June of 1972. It was written some time before that - probably in 1970. The later work, with attourney John Thorne was to bring me to the edge of despair. It culminated in perhaps the most important piece of work I had ever done, which would almost certainly have proved George Jackson to be innocent. Three days later, he was shot dead by the San Quentin guards in a fabricated "escape attempt".
