Alienation  E-mail
A state of being “out of touch with one’self”, of being emotionally split. One becomes an object to oneself, alienated from one's internal climate, so to speak, a stranger to one's own intuitions, as Erich Fromm has so forcefully demonstrated. Marx and Hegel both used the term, Marx attributing the state of alienation to the division of labour undercapitalism.  See: Fromm, E., The Sane Society, Fawcett, Greenwich, Conn, orig. Holt Reinhart, Winston, New York, 1955
