This component comprises two separate PDFs, which together outline key theoretical issues in Critical Education Theory and Critical Pedagogy before charting the emergence of a programme in Critical Praxis that was developed at the University California School of Architecture in Berkeley in the wake of the anti-Vietnam War movement (and the 1970 Kent State Univesity killings in Ohio which precipitated a nationwide academic strike).

 

Here, we see how the antiwar sentiments of the students are transformed into creative community work, designing and building playgrounds in underprivileged neigbourhoods, before eventually developing themselves a programme to design and build houses (at no cost) for deserving individuals, What is significant in this report, are the reflective comments of the students themselves as they point to the important personal changes the projects have caused in their own lives.
