Hannes Meyer was the Marxist Director of the Bauhaus immediately before the ascendency of the Third Reich. In both economic and educational sustainability terms he was the most successful of the Directors - preceded by Walter Gropius and succeeded by Mies Van der Rohe. His students designed and built real projects, his programmes were based on cost-recovery, and he had a passionate commitment to the Bauhaus ideology of functionalism. But his Directorship was sabotaged, his name villified by the architectural community, and his reputation buried and hidden for succeding generations of students. He was replaced by the proto-Fascists Van der Rohe in education and Philip Johnson in practice.  When Johnson and Russell Hitchcock arranged the now legendary Modern Architecture Exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1932, Meyer was excluded, and the seeds were sown for the development of architecture as the lapdog of capitalism, and the career of Johnson as a self-styled and self-proclaimed cultural "whore".
