Critical Theory

Critical Theory is a revisionist Marxist philosophy that interrogates the nature and structure of the social world through the lens of power. Yet it does not simply try to understand the nature of the social world, but also to change it - to make it more humane, equitable and just. Critical Theory therefore has a very close relationship with Critical Practice. There are a number of Critical Theory PDFs freely available on this website, each engaging with a different field of knowledge. Alongside this theoretical base, examples of Critical Practice are also available on this website. They demonstrate concrete instances where Critical Theory has been applied in a specific discipline and where the theories in questions have been put into effect. If you have further examples of the development of Critical Theories you will be able to include them on this site to support other Critical Theorists. Contact me here.

As a brief overview, and as far as this website goes, we might say that Critical Theory covers a wide range of academic disciplines and can be applied to any field of knowledge. A comprehensive description of the application of Critical Theory to a number of knowledge areas is available here in a range of disaciplines:

The list of areas is being augmented all the time.

For a broad overview of the history and theoretical base of the Critical Theory that underlies these studies and to download a supporting PDF click here

You can also go directly to specific case studies in these disciplines. This will also give access to numerous freely downloadable PDFs. All of these PDFs provide an excellent Primer to the subject for students and teachers coming to the subject for the first time, offering clear definitions, descriptions of key concepts and a broad analysis of the cultural and social significance of the subject. Some of the PDFs are also written for Masters and PhD levels.

Although I have tried to make the language used in these studies as simple as I can, I am aware that the technical jargon of Critical Theory may often seem impenetrable. So I have also provided a Glossary available for key definitions of the terms and concepts of Critical Theory. It is possible to augment this Glossary with further examples and explanations of the complex and confusing terminologies and meanings of the field.

You may also wish to relate the theorising you find to the lives of the Critical Theorists themselves. To view biographies of the lives and works of critical theorists by click here. These biographies are being extended and augmented all of the time as time allows.

If you would like to be part of an ongoing discussion group regarding Critical Theory or Critical Practice click here.
